The new air-conditioned local could pave way for an improved safety feature in running of local trains. For the first time, there is a closed circuit camera (CCTV) installed on both ends of a local train, right next to headlight. This will help in finding out details in case of mishaps, accident, collision, derailment or other technical failure. The testings and trials are yet to be carried out for this AC local that has been parked at Virar car-shed for inspections.

Senior officials from Western Railway said that the nitty-gritty of this CCTV needs to be tested. The recording capability, image quality and night vision too will have to be checked. The other parameters like CCTVs, improved disc wheels, underslung motors and machinery, working of AC are to be tested.

This AC train has CCTVs inside the motorcab and on both side-ends too. The one inside motor-cab will help the motorman and guard coordinate, the four CCTVs on both ends too are installed for convenience of guards.

"These black coloured CCTVs will namely keep watch on the door closing and opening," informed a WR official. This camera will display whether the door is ajar or shut, to both guard and motorman. The red-light above the door will indicate if door is shut or open, and the flashing of orange light will indicate commuters when the door shuts. This will avoid delays in train operations.

Usually, it takes around 45 second for AC local to open and shut door at a station during its scheduled halt. But in case of technical problems, it may further delay the process.

Apart from this, the motors and machines going underslung (below the coach) has increased the seating capacity by 10 percent. Also this train is capable of running at speeds upto 160 kmph. As per plans, Mumbai shall receive another AC local by May.

In total 20 AC locals will run on both Western and Central line.
