It has been 9 years since the MRI section was started at the BYL Nair Hospital, but the hospital never hired a dedicated technician, it has been revealed. 36-year-old Rajesh Maru was killed on Saturday night after a freak mishap at the same MRI section where his relatives have alleged a ward boy and an aayah insisted he take cylinder inside the section.

Documents with DNA reveal that it was only in October 2017 that the demand for dedicated technicians was raised and accepted. So far, the MRI section was being run by the X-Ray and CT scan department technicians. The letter signed by the Director of Major BMC Hospitals Dr Avinash Supe states the Radiology department needs to fill vacant posts of 7 MRI technicians, 5 CT Scan technicians and 10 X-Ray technicians.

"We are severely understaffed and we need at least 31 technicians across departments," said a senior official. Ironically, peripheral hospitals recruited 27 technicians last year, just as Nair hospital needs 31.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Health), Sunil Dhamane, said the corporation may consider transferring a few to Nair hospital if the need was so acute. Dr Supe confirmed that the process of hiring was going on.
