Mumbai Monorail to begin second phase soon

All the traction sub-stations in the second phase of Mumbai Monorail were charged on Sunday, thus making room for trial runs on the entire corridor between Wadala Depot-Jacob Circle (Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk).

"MMRDA Commissioner UPS Madan inaugurated the third traction sub-station at Lower Parel Station. The other two of these traction sub-stations (in their second phase) are at Acharya Atre Nagar Station and Ambedkar Nagar Station. These three locations will act as feeders for power supply to the entire system of operating trains," said an MMRDA spokesperson.

While the first phase of the Monorail from Wadala to Chembur (8.9-km) is already in operation, the second phase (10.64-km) will commence soon.

On September 9, the Mumbai Monorail crossed Lalbaug flyover for the first time as part of a series of trial runs that is being held. With the monorail also touching Lower Parel, Chinchpokli and Jacob Circle (Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk) are the only two stations that are now left to be covered. In all there are 18 stations, combining both the phases of the entire monorail route in Mumbai, which is India's only such system.

The first phase between Chembur-Wadala Depot was inaugurated on February 1, 2014 and opened for public the subsequent day.
