Mumbai: Minority quota stalls majority FY admissions
No clarity when process for 2.75 lakh students will be over, State files SLP in Supreme Court to quash Bombay HC decision
Maharashtra government is confident of getting a positive judgement from the Supreme Court over admission to backward category students in minority education institutions. However, since the government will initiate the admission process only after the court hears its special leave petition, the future of the currently stalled First year degree admissions and 2.75 lakh students continues to be in a state of limbo.
He also said that if reserved category students are denied right of admission in minority education institutions then it will be a big loss to them. “It will be unfair to say that the backward category students should compete with general category students while seeking admission in minority institutions... We are hopeful of our victory. These minority colleges were giving admission until 2017 to category students,” said an official requesting anonymity.
In 2001, Mumbai University had issued the circular making 50 per cent mandatory reservations for the backward class students in minority schools and colleges. The remaining seats were available to minority students only.
