Mumbai Metro master plan: Maharashtra government nod for Delhi body revise and update blueprint

A formal nod has been given by the state to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to revise and update Mumbai Metro Master Plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

"Formal nod has been given to DMRC by CM to revise Metro Master Plan and prepare Detailed Project Report (DPR) on metro rails so that traffic congestion issue of Mumbai can be resolved," said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA.

In all, DPRs of four Metro rail corridors will be prepared. The four corridors are – Andheri East to Dahisar East (18-km) on Western Express Highway, Jogeshwari to Kanjurmarg (12-km) on Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Andheri West to Dahisar West (18-km) on Link Road and Bandra Kurla Complex to Mankhurd (12-km).

Apart from these four corridors, the existing planned Metros are already on track. They are – underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ (33.5-km) and partially elevated Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli (32-km).

Later this year, DPRs on these four metro rail corridors are likely to be submitted to the state or MMRDA. At the moment, for the development authority, all the four routes are a priority and will be elevated instead of the earlier planned underground alignments.

In 2003, DMRC was appointed to prepare master plan for Mumbai Metro, who in turn proposed nine metro corridors with a total length of 146.50 kms. The master plan was approved by the MMRDA in back in May 2004. Since then, only one metro rail corridor – Versova to Ghatkopar via Andheri (11.4-kms) is ready and operational.
