As the Joy of Giving Week approaches Mumbai Metro in association with Indian Cancer Society (ICS) has come up with their own way of giving it back to the society by stationing a Mammography Van below Metro stations for four days — from October 5 to 8. The move is aimed at spreading awareness and raising donations for women suffering from breast cancer.

One in every five women is now diagnosed with breast cancer and if detected in early stages, it is easier to fight and beat the deadly disease. But due to lack of regular check ups, it is always detected at a later stage.

"As many as 30 women commuters can avail a free mammography test on first come first serve basis at the van. Literature on breast cancer will be provided at the ICS booths at selective metro stations. This will help create awareness, dispel fears and provide an opportunity for a free mammography test for the metro commuters," said Ulka Bangui, director awareness & detection. Posters, announcements and flash mobs would be held across different stations encouraging people to donate for the cause.

National Streets for Performing Arts (NSPA) will also organise a seven-day workshop for underprivileged children on how to create music from waste. "We will be introducing the children to music, rhythm and basic counts using old plastic bottles and scrap material. There will be regular performances at the Metro stations informing people about DaanUtsav," said Jessica Noronha.

Around 52 children from Ashadeep Association between the ages of 10 and 16 will be allowed on Western Express Highway Station from 5 pm to 6pm.

"We are really looking forward to this session. The activity of creating music from waste material is a great idea. For the underprivileged this is an opportunity, to learn the basics of music using the material easily available to them at their homes and surrounding, which is otherwise not possible for them. This will help them learn new skills as well as gain confidence," said Santosh Panaigrahi from Ashadeep Association.
