Mazgaon recorded the loudest noise during the Eid-e-Milad celebrations on Wednesday this year, however going by the statistics of the past several years, the noise levels continued their downward trend.

Anti-noise pollution crusader and convenor of Awaaz Foundation Sumaira Abdulali took the noise levels. While the minimum noise level recorded was 78 dB the highest came from a truck mounted with the loudspeaker at Mazgaon measuring 105.3dB, which was similar to the highest levels of 2017(105.2 dB) and lower than the highest level of 2016 which was 111.5dB.

Abdulali, who sent the noise report to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Commissioner of Mumbai Police Subodh Jaiswal seeking appropriate action in accordance with noise rules against violations, said that in accordance with Supreme Court and Bombay High court orders, maximum zone-wise permissible decibel levels are required to be maintained at all times and religion is not a ground for violation of noise rules.

"The findings during all festivals this year indicate reduced usage of loudspeakers, especially during processions. This is a very positive indication of the success of anti-noise campaign as a people's movement," she said adding that as this direction gains momentum it will serve to protect everyone's health from the ill effects of noise.

Secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Maharashtra, Maulana Mustaqeem Azmi, said that for past few years there have been constant efforts by the community leaders to dissuade the increasing trend of DJs and loudspeakers as noise pollution is a serious issue affecting people.

"Last two years there have been regular meetings and discussions and they were trying to spread awareness as well as urge people to celebrate the festival in its true spirit without causing any disturbance to others. We are glad that this year the noise levels have come down and we will continue the awareness work ahead," he said.

This year a lot of messages and videos too were doing rounds on the social media too asking people to avoid DJs and playing loud music, which was actually against the teachings of Islam.
