Mumbai: Man molests woman on running local, held

The accused has been identified as Ashraf Ali Shaikh (26) who is a resident of Sion Koliwada.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway police have arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly outraged the modesty of a 30-year-old woman passenger in a running local train ten days ago. To escape harassment, the victim was jumped off the moving train following which she sustained several injuries.

The accused has been identified as Ashraf Ali Shaikh (26) who is a resident of Sion Koliwada.

The incident occurred at around 8:20 am when the woman mistakenly boarded a train that was headed to the Kurla yard from CSMT station. When Shaikh entered the coach, she yelled at him telling since it was a ladies compartment. An argument broke out between the two and Shaikh allegedly shut one of the doors and tried to molest her.

"Unaware that the train was going to the yard, she panicked when the train did not stop at Masjid Station and she leapt out of the moving train to save herself from the accused. Despite being injured, she managed to walk to the Masjid station where on-duty cops spotted her and immediately rushed her to St George's hospital," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, western railways, Purushottam Karad.

After conducting an identity parade on Tuesday, Shaikh was arrested. His identity was verified from the CCTV footage procured by the police. "We have registered a case under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code and further investigating is underway. Shaikh has many cases registered against him and most of them pertain to sexual offences. Shaikh has been remanded to police custody," added Karad.
