Leader of Opposition (LoP) Vijay Wadettiwar demanded the resignation of the BJP MLA Narendra Mehta for his illegal cutting of mangroves to develop the sprawling high-end clubhouse at Mira road. He also said that if the BJP leadership has any moral high ground, then they should remove Mehta from the party also.

"BJP leader uses the power to grab the land and protect it. We have received several complaints against the Mehta. We demand that the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should set the committee to probe this case," said Wadettiwar.

Despite its party MLA being accused of killing 3.5 acres of mangroves to create a club, the BJP seems to tread wearily on initiating action against Mira Bhayender MLA Narendra Mehta. However, the BJP's ally, the Shiv Sena has called for action in the case and pointed to how mangroves were critical to the eco-system of Mumbai and surrounding areas to prevent flooding and inundation.

When questioned on the subject spokesperson Atul Shah expressed his ignorance on the subject and recommended to speak to someone senior like Keshav Upadhye. When we questioned senior spokesperson Keshav Upadhye he played safe and advised DNA to speak to Mehta directly.

"He is an influential leader," said a BJP functionary, who refused to comment on the record when contacted making the MLA's clout evident. BJP spokespersons too declined to comment. However, Shiv Sena MLC and spokesperson Manisha Kayande was scathing in her criticism. "Destroying mangroves is a crime, especially so, as flooding in Mumbai and (coastal areas of) Maharashtra, is linked to this. No one should be spared. The Chief Minister is competent and he must take action," said Kayande.

"People have heightened expectations from public representatives. People have reposed faith in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi and voted (for the BJP). Hence, they must take extra caution," she explained.
