City schools are giving students practical lessons on nutritional science.

Ecole Mondiale World School, Juhu, and Podar International School, Santa Cruz, recently conducted a seminar teaching students how to read nutritional labels, how the contents affect one’s health, and how to detect food which has gone past its expiry date.

“Such workshops are necessary for school students, as they come to know more about the packaged foods they eat” said Vandana Lulla, principal, Podar International School.

The seminar was conducted by Equinox Labs, a laboratory that carries out tests in food and hygiene. Under an initiative to teach students about health and hygiene, it has targeted 50 city schools.

It is involved in nutritional labelling, water safety and corporate hygiene.

According to one of the teachers, the children were inquisitive and enjoyed the quizzes conducted as part of the seminar. They were impressed by the concept of ‘daily values’. For instance, a healthy adult requires 2,000 calories per day.

“We have started this initiative as part of our corporate social responsibility, and so we are conducting them free of cost. This will help students understand how the food they eat will affect them in their adult lives - how bad food habits can lead to obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases,” said Ashwin Bhadri, head of business relations, Equinox.

Jaideep Mirashi, trustee of Hill Spring School, said, “It is a good initiative. Through this kind of workshops, our children will learn about nutrition, the food pyramid and the healthy choices they can make.”
