Little did Prity Santosh Patil realise that visiting her brother on Raksha Bandhan day would turn out to be a tragedy, but thanks to an alert Vakola police, who came to her rescue.

Like all sisters, Prity too had gone to visit her brother at Santacruz to tie Rakhi. In the melee she left her 10 tola (100 grams) gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh in the auto-rickshaw she was travelling in.

The auto driver instead of returning the jewellery, fled with his vehicle. However, Vakola police nabbed him and returned the jewellery to Prity, who could not believe her eyes that the pleasant gift came as a blessing in disguise for the agony she went through.

According to the police, Prity took an autorickshaw from Jogeshwari (E) along with her three-year-old son on Thursday, heading to Vakola, Santacruz (E) where her brother resides. While travelling Prity kept all her valuables in her handbag, which included her Mangalsutra and gold chains. When she alighted at Vakola from the auto, she forgot to pick her handbag. Later when she realised her blunder, she rushed to the spot, but the auto driver was nowhere to be seen.

When she complained to the Vakola police and narrated the story, a trap was laid after checking the CCTV footage from the area.

The police could trace more than 30 autos which passed at the same time from there.

The Vakola police soon detained an auto driver identified as Anilkumar Gupta, also a resident of Santacruz, who denied about the incident. But later on Friday at 2 in the morning, the cops confirmed it was him with the help of CCTV and hence they nabbed Anilkumar Gupta from his Kalina residence and recovered the valuables from him.

Senior Inspector Bharat Satpute said, "We have returned the gold ornaments to the woman and we also detained the auto driver Anilkumar Gupta for not informing the police and running away with the gold jewellery. Gupta told the police that he was suffering from high fever and due to his ill-health he didn't inform the police. The interrogation is on."

"I was going to tie rakhi to my brother Prashant Atmaram Thakur at Santacruz. I, along with my three-year-old son, took an auto and kept all my jewellery into my handbag for safety reasons, but on reaching Vakola, I realised my handbag is missing and when I went to check on the auto, he was nowhere visible. I soon approached the Vakola police to file an official complaint. I thank the cops who soon nabbed the auto driver returned my jewellery on Friday. It was really Raksha Bandhan gift for me from the police officers. I really feel proud of the efforts they put in," said Prity quite excitedly.
