Within just six days of its arrival, the monsoon has already sent down an average 280.8 mm of rainfall. Data from the civic disaster management cell reveals that the rainfall witnessed so far is 12% of the average annual rainfall of 2,294 mm witnessed in the city since 2004.
This time last year, the rains had not even started. The sound beginning this year has raised hopes that the rainfall will be healthy.
In the first week, since its onset on June 11, the monsoon rains have already scaled the total rainfall witnessed in the whole of June last year.
Studies on the rainfall pattern in the last six years have revealed that the month of June accounts for 20% of the annual rains on an average.
The sound start has also raised hopes among civic engineers that June will see a lot more rain this year.
Hydraulic department engineers are among the ones desperately seeking more rains in June. “Mumbai needs rains for the catchments in and around it to fill up,” a senior hydraulics department official said.
Deficient rains last monsoon have led to the drying up of reservoirs. Facing a water shortage, citizens have been subjected to a 15% cut in water supply until July 15.
Hydraulic engineers said the earlier it rained, the better it was for the city.
The months of July and August usually account for a lion’s share of the total rainfall. On an average, 35-38% rains are witnessed in July, while 25% rains are witnessed during the August months.
Civic officials were praying that the rains repeat the trend in 2008, when 40% rains were received in June itself.

It has so far rained on 10 of the 16 days in June so far. Pre-monsoon showers were witnessed on four days before the onset of monsoon.
There were 12 rain days in June last year. “Rains began in the second half of the month last monsoon,” a civic disaster management source observed.
While civic officials were hoping for the good spell to continue, they were also hoping that the monsoon continues the trend of avoiding a heavy downpour during high tide time.
Throughout monsoon last year, there was not a single day when heavy rains coincided with high tide time.
