A 21-year-old girl has approached the Sion police after she received an anonymous mail which tried to extort money from her claiming that her mail account was hacked and in order to prevent data leaks further, she would have to pay the money in form of bitcoins.

The complainant who is a resident of Sion is pursuing her studies and is also a teacher by profession. Last week she saw a mail in spam folder which stated that her account was hacked, all her mobile data was compromised and it could be misused in future. "The mail was sent from id gruizn@mail.b.me.hu and the content further showed that if the victim wanted to prevent further leak of her data, she will have to pay $764 (approx Rs 53, 039) from a bitcoin address (149zSza4sduThkNwrCk7VjdUKgetkXsAF) provided in the mail within 48 hours after seeing the mail. Also, the victim was informed that after she makes the payment, all her information shall be deleted and no one shall contact her in future unless she shares the mail details with anyone else or especially to the cops," said a police officer. However, the victim did not pay the extortion and she approached the police the next day.

"We have registered the case under section 385 of the Indian Penal Code and section 43, 66c and 66d of the Information Technology Act. Further investigation of the case is underway and no arrests have been made so far," said senior police inspector of Sion police station, Lalita Gaikwad.
