Mumbai gets the shivers at 14.6°C
Santa Cruz, in the suburbs, is the coolest one with temperature at 7° below normal.
People woke up to a cold morning on Monday as the city saw temperatures falling by almost seven degrees to 14.6°C.
By afternoon, though, the temperature soared to 33.3°C. While Santa Cruz was the coldest, early morning Colaba was relatively warmer at 21°C and the day temperature went up to 32.9°C.
“At present, Maharashtra is going through a severe cold wave and Mumbai is feeling its effect,” NY Apte, deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department, said. The cold wave is because of “western disturbance passing through the Jammu and Kashmir region”, he said. And this has resulted in cold winds blowing over the western part of the country.
The temperature started dipping on Saturday night. The Met department recorded 15.2°C at Santa Cruz on Sunday morning — more than five degree below normal.
According to IMD records, the lowest recorded temperature in Mumbai during this time of the year was on November 19, 1990, when it fell to 13.3°C.
Residents in the suburbs are, however, “pleasantly surprised”. Milind Kulkarni from Bandra said winter has arrived after a slight delay.
