Continuing its efforts to press for action against errant autorickshaw drivers through its Un(fare) campaign, DNA visited the spot outside Infiniti Mall in Malad on Saturday. It was the same old story of brazen refusals and helpless commuters.

Amid reports of pressure mounting on authorities to crack down against refusal and rough behaviour, some auto drivers cleverly kept the meter half down, which gives them some room to refuse fare. However, they used it to their advantage to pick and choose the ride.

As per mall management, the footfall at the shopping complex is nearly a lakh on weekdays and touches 4 lakh during weekends. But the experience turns unpleasant as they step out. “Hapless commuters carrying shopping bags have to wait more than 15-20 minutes as dozens of autos refuse to ferry them,” said a mall staffer, who did not wish to be identified.

Despite police presence in the area, very little help is offered. Refusal of fare is an infraction under the law and invites penalty.

According to transport department officials, they have cancelled the licences of over 900 autorickshaws in the city in the past six months for refusing customers a ride. However, the action seems way too little.
