Mumbai: Fireman sustains grave injuries in Powai's Haiko mall fire breakout

The fire was doused within 45 minutes and all other people evacuated safely.

A fireman sustained severe injuries in a blaze that broke out at a shopping mall at Powai on Wednesday morning. He was shifted to a nearby private hospital where he underwent spine surgery. The fire was doused within 45 minutes and all other people evacuated safely.

On Wednesday at around 10.23 am, a small fire broke out at Powai's Haiko Mall. The fire brigade team rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Though the fire was small, the whole building was smoke-logged. Reportedly, the fireman, identified as Devendra Koradkar was trying to make space for ventilation when he lost his balance and fell down from the first floor. He sustained a fracture in the spine and broke his left hand.

28-years-old Devendra Koradkar old joined MFB two years ago and is stationed at Vikhroli fire station. He is the only earning member of his family, and his wife is pregnant, informed a fireman.

Prima facie, it appears that the stall for preparing eatables on electric appliances has been set up without permission. The fire was broke out due to the accumulation of carbon in the chimney. An FIR has been lodged against the owner of the stall and manager of the mall, said a fire officer.
