Decentralization of waste process and segregation at the source are the best practices to reduce the burden of solid waste, suggests the experts. is also crucial.

Municipal solid waste can be divided into wet and dry waste. In Mumbai, solid waste consists of 42 % wet waste i.e. Biodegradable waste from residential and non-residential areas. Generally wet waste is difficult to be managed due to high moisture content. Though segregation is mandatory at source level now, it still not gets the required momentum. As per the civic body's official data, the segregation at source has risen up to 65 per cent. But it is still way below the 100 per cent achievement. Even the BMC could not bring a solution to dry waste until now.

The BMC makes wet waste process mandatory to the bulk generators, and now after visiting and reviewing process of various cities like Indore, Panji, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, the BMC has issued global tenders for the disposal of dry waste by the recycling methods. But the social activist and solid waste management experts have a different view.

Mumbai Vikas Samiti's Convener S N Patankar said, "The current centralised method of waste collection is not generating any revenue for the civic body. If a decentralised method is implemented, not just the BMC save money but it could also generate a revenue of Rs 1,100 crore to my estimation."

The BMC has now introduced new vehicles for garbage which have three separate parts for dry, wet and e-waste. "Many other cities already introduced such vehicles and it proved to be no use as if one compartment get full and rest waste will get dumped in another compartment," said Nitai Mehta, founder trustee of Praja foundation.
