Mumbai: Doctors remove dentures from 60-year-old man's throat

A 60-year-old Saki Naka resident Abdul Gani swallowed his plastic denture while drinking water. After frequent trials in different hospitals to remove it endoscopically, Dr Roy Patankar, Director and Gastroenterologist at Zen Multi Specialty Hospital along with his team performed a complex and complicated oesophagotomy to retrieve the denture.

Gani visited the hospital with unbearable pain in chest and upper abdomen. A 6 cm plastic denture was blocking the food pipe making difficult for Gani to swallow and breath. While an x-ray was conducted to find out the location of the foreign body, doctors failed to locate it. Later a CT scan of chest and abdomen was conducted to find out the denture's location.

Dr Tanveer Majid, Thoracic Oncosurgeon, said "The case was very complicated owing to patient's age and failed attempts in other hospitals. Due to the patient's smoking habit, it was difficult to anaesthetise him. We had performed oesophagotomy to remove the foreign body."

Dr Roy Patankar added, "This patient had swallowed the denture which had impacted the narrowest part of food pipe. It was not possible to remove it endoscopically as the dimension of the denture was three times the size of oesophagus."
