Mumbai doctors cure 3-yr-old Latur girl with rare syndrome

Earlier, her parents who are farm labourer in Latur visited various private hospitals. Her syndrome was misdiagnosed to be epilepsy by a local doctor and she was treated for epilepsy for a few months.

A three-year-old girl from a village in Latur, who has been bedridden for more than a year will now be able to walk and do all her daily activities on her own. Prachi Sagar, a patient suffered from hurler syndrome with cervical spine deformity and was operated by a team of doctors from state-run Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital. While her parents claim that she had a fall while playing a year ago after which she was bedridden due to paralysis in all four limbs, it was later diagnosed that she is suffering from a rare syndrome.

Earlier, her parents who are farm labourer in Latur visited various private hospitals. Her syndrome was misdiagnosed to be epilepsy by a local doctor and she was treated for epilepsy for a few months.

After starting her treatment in GT Hospital, Prachi was advised investigation like MRI, CT scan, X-ray. Prachi was operated on July 31 and is now recovering in the hospital.

Dr Dhiraj Sonawane, head of orthopaedic and spine at GT Hospital, who operated on her, said, "Her parents visited the pediatric medicine department regarding her case and it was later referred to an orthopaedic department. After the investigation, she was diagnosed with hurler syndrome with cervical spine deformity which caused severe spinal cord compression below the brain stem. During the surgery, we planned to reduce and fix the dislocated first and second vertebra with the titanium screw and decompress the spinal cord."

As per the doctors, the challenge was to pass two screws from a narrow tunnel of bones between the spinal cord and a major artery to the brain. An artificial bone graft from Tata bone bank was used for the surgery.

Dr Ajay Chandanwale, dean of JJ Hospital, said, "We are hoping that the children get back to normal activities as she is showing positive improvement. The girl is now shifted to the general ward and her family is happy to see improvement in her condition."

Anita Sagar, mother of Prachi said, "We tried giving her treatment in the district hospital but she there was no signs of her improvement. We were later told to take her to Mumbai for further treatment. After the surgery, she has started moving her limbs and is giving a positive response. She might get discharged in a week or two."
