According to the latest data released by the Health authorities, Mumbai's slum area Dharavi is once again witnessing a sharp surge in COVID-19 cases. The surge is seen after a gap of six months.
The latest data shows Asia's largest slum, Dharavi recording 30 new cases in the last 24 hours. On Friday Dharavi recorded 29 new coronavirus cases.
The last time Dharavi witnessed such a daily rise was on September 11 when 33 cases were reported. The number of daily cases remained below 30 after September, with zero new cases in December.
With the addition of the new infections reported on Thursday, the caseload in the area has reached 4,328. There are 140 active cases.
On February 26, the area had only 51 active cases but in less than a month, the number of active cases has gone up by almost three times.
Dharavi COVID-19 Data
Dharavi is spread across 2.5 square kilometres and has a population of 6.5 lakh.
It recorded 117 cases in January but has since seen a daily rise in cases in the following months.
In February Dharavi reported 157 COVID-19 cases.
The number of infections has shot up by 35% to 213 cases in March.
The BMC has appointed 35 marshals to ensure that people in the area follow COVID-19 protocol.
140 persons from the area are undergoing treatment for the virus while 3,872 have been discharged.
BMC data reveals the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the region so far is 4328.
This year January 22, 26, 27 and 31- the area did not report even a single case of COVID-19.
No new case of COVID-19 was registered on February 1 too.
Since the second week of February, a sudden spike in the number of COVID-19 cases was reported from the area.
