Worried over what to do with the floral offerings generated in huge quantities during the Ganesh festival, an upscale mall in Thane has a solution for devotees, which could even help the public gardens run by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

Nirmalya are generally offerings made to God during worship, which includes flowers, garlands, plants, leaves, cotton and others.

The mall has been running an eco-friendly campaign called 'Nirmlaya Project' from September 2, which will continue till the last day of the Ganesh festival and is asking devotees to simply visit the mall and not only deposit all their floral offerings in the special containers kept at its six different entry points but also encourage their friends and relatives to do the same and not dump these into the water bodies during immersion.

According to a spokesperson all the nirmlaya collected will be upcycled at Viviana Organic Manure Processing Plant to generate manure. "This organic manure will not only be distributed for free to our visitors after the Ganesh festival but also supplied to TMC for using it in their parks and garden," said the spokesperson.

"On behalf of TMC an NGO called Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth, collects flowers and garlands from all the ponds and composts it. Similarly, the Viviana Mall too is carrying out activities in line with MPCB's guidelines and the same is being strongly encouraged and well received by TMC administration," shared Omprakash Divate, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, TMC.
