Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths have recently registered a bribery case against an Airport Customs Superintendent and a head hawaldar of Customs at Mumbai Airport for allegedly taking a bribe from a commercial artist and photographer for allegedly providing him an Export Certificate to take along their camera equipment. The victim had smartly video recorded custom officials while they were demanding a bribe, based on which the case had been registered.

According to the CBI, the complainant, a Goregaon resident Omkar Raut had gone to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to board a flight to Qatar for an assignment, on October 15, last year, with his friend.

"Raut in his complaint alleged that Airport Customs Superintendent Vasudev Ninave had demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 for issuing an Export Certificate for camera and other equipment. Ninave also threatened Raut and his friend saying if they did not pay the money now, they will have to pay customs duty on returning from Qatar," said a CBI official.

He added, since Raut and his friend were getting late, they agreed to comply with Ninave's demand under duress and threat.

"Ninave then signed the Export Certificate after the victim agreed to give the money. Ninave then instructed JS Mondkar, a hawaldar with the Customs department to collect money from Raut and his friend. The said customs official then took Raut and his friend to a nearby toilet and took Rs 4000 from them. When Ninave was instructing the other Custom official to collect money from Raut and his friend, Raut had secretly recorded video of the said communication on his mobile phone. After returning to India on October 19, they lodged a complaint against Ninave and Mondkar. After seeking approval from Customs & Central Excise department we haveregistered a case against the accused customs officials a few days ago," the official said.
