My family had to move from Prabhadevi to Kalyan for one reason: Mumbai realty rates were unaffordable. Simply out of the budget. A few years ago, when we attempted to move from Kalyan to Thane, even that wasn't possible because the rates there are too high for a 2 BHK. Mumbai rates are unaffordable for the common man. So we had to move out.

I had to buy a house in Vasai, from my earlier residence in Kanjurmarg. When I wanted to buy a house, the interest rates were very high, other than the astronomical realty prices. We wanted to buy a house in Bhandup, Thane or nearby areas, but the rates were such that we couldn't afford it even in these areas. However, the extended suburbs of Virar offered flats at cheaper rates. So we decided to move there.

I have almost given up on the hope of buying a house in recent times, for a simple reason that I cannot afford it. Even if I think of buying one, I will have to look in the far extended suburbs like Virar on western line or beyond Badlapur on the central line.

Samar Pakhre

If you ask me how important it is to own a house in Mumbai city limits, then I will fall short of words. I can only say that it is very important. I am happy that in my second attempt I won a 1BHK in MHADA lottery in Mulund's Gavanpada area. Currently I reside in Badlapur, in a house that my father owns. I am 38 years old and needed a house, and finally I have it. Imagining buying a house in Mumbai from a private developer. That was out of the question for me.
