While the fishing community celebrated Narali Purnima, a coconut festival in their Koliwadas, on Saturday, citizens will be celebrating Raksha Bandhan on Sunday.

Every year, the bylanes of Koliwadas are filled with coconut as community members celebrate Narali Purnima by organising competitions of breaking the coconut.

Community members celebrate the festival by offering coconut (narial) to god. They pray and try to appease the sea god before beginning their new fishing season.

Speaking about how they celebrate the festival, Prahlad Worlikar, a resident of Worli, Koliwada, and secretary of Worli Koliwada Community Welfare Co-operative Society said: "We celebrate it in a traditional way by wearing traditional attire. We organise a procession where a coconut is taken in a palkhi and later immersed in the sea before sunset. We pray for our community and fishing business."

"Every year, we prepare a variety of sweets from coconut since morning and distribute them to our neighbors. We greet each other by distributing coconut sweets," added Worlikar.

A resident of Borivali, Supriya Dhanmeher, said: "We make different sweets and food items like coconut rice, coconut wadi, modak, karanji for lunch. In the evening, we go to a beach to perform a small pooja. We wrap the coconut in a gold paper and distribute it to our neighbors."

Besides Narali Purnima, another festival — Raksha Bandhan will also be celebrated this weekend. Sisters are buying rakhis from the market to tie them on their brothers' wrists. "My family comes together on the occasion to celebrate the festival every year. We make sweets at home for our brothers. We have a get-together on this occasion," said Shipra Satam.
