One of the arrested has four cases registered against him, which raises an alarm on the need for background verification of these cleanup marshalls appointed by the civic body. The accused, Ganesh Balram and Shaffiuddin Khan, have been booked for extortion, assault, robbery and threatening.

According to the police, the accused would mainly target outstation people, who would come at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and by alleging that they have smoked or spit on the road, they would rob money from them.

Similarly this week, the accused robbed Uttar Pradesh-based Ramesh Chouhan by claiming that he was chewing tobacco. The accused took Rs 12,000 from his pocket and asked him to leave. When the victim attempted to stop them, the duo assaulted the victim and threatened him before fleeing from the spot.
