The BEST workers have intensified their hunger strike with their families also joining them in their fast nearly 60 hours after it was started. The fast has been intensified after there was news that BEST management will agree to a mere Rs 780 crore that would hardly make a difference against their demand of implementing the 7th pay commission. Union leader Shashank Rao was rushed to KEM hospital with low blood pressure amidst the increasing tension.

On Thursday morning, the family members including women and children came to Wadala depot for the participating in the hunger strike. There are already several bus staff who are part of the strike. Though until now it has not affected the buses on the road or the electric supply to homes. In fact on Thursday afternoon, leader of BEST Sanyukt Kaamgar Kruti Samiti (BSKKS) Shashank Rao was taken to KEM Hospital and was later discharged.

Sources said that the urgency to intensify the hunger strike came up after they were informed that the BEST administration and Shiv Sena-led BEST Workers Union were agreeing to a pact for approving Rs 780 crore. "This is a way too little an amount that what we have been demanding under the 7th Pay Commission," said a BEST Union member.

This amount would simply mean that each BEST employee will get Rs 2,000-2,500 as a hike while they have been demanding hike of anywhere between Rs 7,500-9,000 per employee. In fact, on August 30, the BEST Committee will be finalizing this at the meeting to be held at 12 noon. The Sena led BEST is expected to make an announcement on the same as 'good news' before the Ganesh festival.
