Colaba police on Saturday arrested a man who used to steal cash from donation boxes of temples. The police have recovered the stolen money and cutter from the accused, who also has a criminal record. The accused has been identified as Suresh Jadhav, a resident of Mahatma Phule Nagar at Cuffe Parade.

According to the police, Jadhav had come to a Ganesh temple near Sasoon Dock in Colaba around 4 am on Saturday. "An alert citizen saw Jadhav break open the donation box using a cutter and stealing the money. He then informed a police patrolling party about the same," said an officer from Colaba police station.

He added, as soon as Jadhav spotted the police, he fled from the spot. "Police gave him a chase after which he was caught some distance away from the temple. We had recovered the stolen money and a cutter from him. Jadhav has cases of theft and house breakin registered against him. We are probing his role in other donation box theft cases from Colaba temples," said the officer.
