Taking a step further in celebrating Ganeshotsav in an eco-friendly way, Santacruz resident Rintu Rathod has made a Ganesh idol out of payasam kheer. It took nine months for her to conceptualize and make a perfect idol out of kheer.

She has been making chocolate idol for many years now. The idol is later immersed in milk and is distributed to needy children. This year too she has used the same technique. After celebrating the festival for 11 days, the idol made up of payasam will be immersed in milk at home and later the kheer will be distributed as a sweet prasad to orphans and street children across the city.

Rintu, said, "I have been making chocolate Ganesha for eight years. This year I made a small chocolate idol, and came up with another edible payasam idol as well. While I was working on this for the last nine months and after a lot of trials and error I succeeded in make an idol out of payasam. It is edible and contains dry fruits, milk powder, broken rice, sugar, elaichi, and saffron cooked payasam. Later freeze-drying technique is used to give it a shape."

She further added, "Chocolate is a western concept, where as payasam is an Indian traditional sweet. Kheer is served in our temples as prasadam. Just like the chocolate Ganesha, immersion in milk it will result in kheer prasadam which can be distributed to people."

While Rathod has been conducting clay and chocolate idol making workshops, she is now planning to take a workshop on kheer idol as well. She added, "I have taught more than 1000 people to make an idol out of chocolate, clay. Will be soon starting to take workshops on kheer idol as well so that many more people come forward to make an edible idol and celebrate the festival in an environment friendly way."
