In a city where walking at peace is a challenge, the government is planning 'super footpaths'. This is what the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and urban planners are working on and the first of such a footpath has been proposed between Siddhivinayak Metro station and Sewri. The super footpath will be 6-metre wide and it'll give pedestrians all the space.

This footpath will start from Siddhivinayak Metro station and go via Prabhadevi after crossing the tracks, then towards KEM Hospital, and finally reach Sewri. Vijay Singhal, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern suburbs), said: "We are working on improving the footpath. We are widening it so that it provides more space for people to walk. We have worked this out as part of the comprehensive mobility plan."

A super footpath will be made of cement concrete. Normally, footpaths are 3-metres wide or even less, but this one will be 6 metres wide. It will also integrate both Central and Western Railway lines as well as the Metro rail route. For this, the bridges will have to be made with wider walkways."

The whole idea is to allow people to walk conveniently on a wide footpath. There is a need for developing pedestrian-friendly roads," said Sreekumar, Lead Urban Development, WRI India. "One side of the footpath can be made 6-metre while the vehicles parked there can be taken in the interior roads."

As per the basic study made on this 3-km route, there are around 1,200 vehicles parked on road, and shops have encroached on the footpath. Currently, BMC is having meetings at its ward level on this. Even with traffic police, the civic body has been unable to remove the impediments.

This route was selected as there are several offices, hospitals, restaurants, shops and commercial complexes along it and the density of commuters coming out of different modes of mass transit. At present, the footpaths have been encroached by hawkers, extension of shops, hutments, and parked vehicles.
