MUMBAI
With currencies falling against $, Hanoi becomes most affordable city.
The tumbling value of the Indian rupee has made travelling expensive for Indians.
Asian countries can be their ideal destinations as travel to Europe and US will burn a bigger hole in the pockets.
The Indian rupee closed at a record low of 58.15 against the dollar on Monday. With this, Mumbai has emerged as the sixth-most affordable city in Asia going by the price index comparison, reveals a survey by a leading travel portal TripAdvisor.
The survey calculated the price index based on the cost of one night for two people in a four-star hotel, cocktails, two-course meals with wine and two taxi journeys of two miles (3kms) each.
Eight Asian cities found mention in the list of the top 20 most-affordable cities around the globe. As per the survey, the total price index of Mumbai came to Rs13,572. “The list highlights Asia as the most pocket-friendly continent for India while Europe is expectedly the most expensive,” says Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor India.
Hanoi in Vietnam topped the list of the most-affordable city in Asia — you will spend Rs9,470 for a night’s stay at a hotel.
Hanoi was followed by Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and Dubai (UAE). Mumbai, which stood sixth in the ranking, was followed by Beijing, Taipei, Macau, Hong Kong, Seoul, Jakarta and Singapore.
Tokyo stood last in the affordable city list -- travellers will have to shell out Rs21,749 a night at a hotel. Paris topped the most expensive non-Asian cities list --- you will be poorer by Rs32,337 for one night stay. Norway in Oslo follows with a price index of Rs31,423 and Zurich in Switzerland which costs travellers Rs28,293 for each night, said the survey.
