Officers of unit-2 of the city's crime branch on Saturday conducted a raid at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which runs the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, and arrested 10 people for running an illegal horse race betting racket.

According to the police, the accused were accepting bets on a horse-racing event in Pune and taking money without taking RWITC's permission and were operating without licence to avoid taxes.

The accused have been identified as Chetan Solanki, Iliyas Yusuf Galiyara, Hamjas Daji, Prashant Jogadiya, Paresh Shah, Sandeep Yadav, Sandeep Shirke, Afzalali Shah, Rajesh Agarwal and Mohammed Rehman Shaikh.

As per the complainant, the unit was tipped-off about a few men who involved in a racket at Mahalaxmi Racecourse where the players were placing bets on the Pune-based race which was being monitored from a television screen in Mumbai.

"Purchasing and selling betting tickets in such racing events without paying taxes is a new type of tax evasion seen leads to financial strain. This particular GST fraud leads to a loss of crores of rupees. So far we have arrested 10 people but many other middlemen are yet to be nabbed. We have registered a case under section 34 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Gambling Act and the Maharashtra Race- Courses Licensing Act," the officer added.
