MSRTC chief Kapoor shunted out; Sahay remains critical

The state government on Thursday transferred Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) managing director Deepak Kapoor as the secretary of the state food and civil supplies department. He replaces Bhagwan Sahai, who has been shifted to the general administration department (GAD).

Meanwhile, additional director general of police Ranjit Kumar Sahay’s condition remains critical.  

Kapoor was in the news after senior IPS officer Sahay, who set himself on fire last week, had submitted an internal inquiry report listing alleged irregularities during Kapoor’s tenure in the MSRTC. Sahay was the chief vigilance officer of the transport body when he submitted the report.

Kapoor has been replaced by Vikas Kharge in MSRTC.

The Malabar Hill police, who are to investigate the attempted suicide of Sahay, are yet to record the statement of the family. While Sahay’s condition remains critical, police said that they will not put any pressure on his family for their statement. Hence, no case has been registered so far.

Police are yet to conduct a spot panchnama (crime scene investigation), sources said. Sahay was admitted to Bombay Hospital with 55 percent burn after he tried to immolate himself in an alleged attempt of committing suicide.

While the exact reason that triggered Sahay to take the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, sources said that a tiff between the officer and his wife could have been the reason as their relationship has soured over the years. However, another source said that the reason could also be work-related. 

Since Sahay’s windpipe and foodpipe were damaged, the police have not been allowed to talk to him. An executive magistrate visited Sahay to record his statement but he had to return as he was not allowed to speak to the senior officer.

Sahay had poured inflammable liquid on himself at their Malabar Hill residence on Friday night last week, after which he was rushed to the hospital. Initially, it was being said that Sahay had tried to burn his wife, who is an advocate and two daughters before setting himself on fire. However, this has been denied by the police.
