Members of Parliament from the city on Monday called on the Western Railway and placed a number of demands, including having baby crèches for working women at stations, audit of railway land and better connectivity. Other demands include proper rehabilitation of slums, faster completion of Oshiwara station and putting up road maps of landmarks at all each station to guide newcomers.
A senior official said that nearly 14 MPs turned up for the meeting that was attended by senior WR officials. “There were lots of demands and a few of them were quite interesting ones,” an official who attended the meeting said. Officials said that a baby crèche for working women at railway stations in Mumbai was mooted by Rajya Sabha MP Bharatkumar Raut. While Lok Sabha MP Priya Dutt called for audit of railway land, Lok Sabha MP from Thane Sanjeev Naik demanded better connectivity.
“More than 70 lakh commuters travel by city’s rail lines and many among them are working women. I have made two demands before the local railways today. One was to have baby crèches at all railway stations in Mumbai so that working women could leave their babies there and pick them up on their way home. My other demand was to have proper signages at stations, highlighting the importance of the suburb and landmarks there,” Raut told DNA.
“WR general manager Mahesh Kumar gave us a presentation of all the initiatives been taken by their railways for the suburban lines. We put in our points for consideration. I spoke about an audit of all the railway lands most of which have been encroached.
There must be a policy in place for rehabilitation of the settlements on the land along with the support of the state government,” Dutt said.
Meanwhile, the much awaited air-conditioned local train in Mumbai will start from April 2013. Thane MP Sanjeev Naik said WR general manager Mahesh Kumar has asked his officials to get the train running by April 2013.
