MUMBAI
Road accidents claim thousands of lives in Mumbai and in Maharashtra every year. And, as in the case of the accident that occurred on Friday night at Bandra Reclamation, the Maharashtra Police says speeding is the biggest culprit for road accidents, followed by lane cutting and drunk driving.
According to data from the Maharashtra Police’s state highway traffic department, more than 93,769 persons have lost their lives since 2004 in road accidents on the state’s highways.
What’s worse, the statistics suggest that the number is increasing.
Around13,500 persons were killed in 66,300 mishaps that occurred on the state’s highways in 2012.
The number of fatalities in highway accidents in 2011 was 13,000, a highway traffic police officer said.
