Varadia got stuck after the lift of a building in Malad (East) supposedly malfunctioned, dragging her upwards, even as others with her inside could only watch the whole thing helplessly. The young woman's mother is in shock as she was outside the lift, waiting to get in, and saw the entire accident, her daughter screaming for help.

The Kurar police said around 8pm on Sunday, Varadia, a resident of Pathanwadi, had gone to Al-Musulfa building to meet the mehendi designer. "On reaching the building, Varadia entered the lift and then stuck her head out to call her mother, when suddenly the automatic doors closed and the lift started moving up. Varadia was dragged along and her head banged on the first floor slab, causing a severe head injury," said an officer.

"Varadia's mother is in trauma, she witnessed the entire mishap. We are yet to record her statement."

He added, "The residents of the building, after hearing her screams, came running and somehow managed to stop the lift and free her. She was taken to hospital but declared dead before admission."

The Kurar police have registered a case of accidental death and are waiting for a report from the lift inspector to ascertain whether the lift malfunctioned.
