Senior citizens in Mumbai and across Maharashtra will soon have access to a mobile application on their smartphones to get assistance for their daily problems, and during emergencies, information on old age homes nearby, and volunteers to assist them and other services. The application will be launched in 2017. The Social Justice Department is actively working to ensure the application is launched next year, the Bombay High Court was informed on Wednesday.

Advocate Siddharth Murarka, appearing on behalf of NGO Mission Justice, told the court that he had been informed by department officials that most of the suggestions given by him had been accepted, and that they were working on creating a mobile application and website for senior citizens. It will be finalised in three weeks time, and will be shown to him for further suggestions, after which it will go live.

Murarka said the application and website will collate data on senior citizens and also provide them with services available in the vicinity, a dedicated helpline number, numbers of police stations, protection officers' details, among other information. The website will also provide the option of adopting a parent, wherein people can fund an elderly person's old age home stay.

The website will also keep a record of senior citizens living in old age homes and the food being provided to them. "If this application launches soon, it will benefit the senior citizens," Murarka said.

A division bench of justices SS Kemkar and Prakash Naik has posted the matter for further hearing in the second week of January. A PIL sought proper publicity for the Maintenance and Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act and its effective implementation.

The government, in an affidavit filed earlier, said several schemes extending assistance to senior citizens have been implemented, and efforts are being taken according to rules framed under the Act.

The PIL directs the state government and the Centre to implement different aspects of the Act to benefit senior citizens.
