In order to make upcoming Metro stations in the city look more attractive, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to give the interior and exterior of the stations area-specific themes in a bid to promote the area's culture and identity.

For example, the Borivali East Metro station near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will be based on a 'greenery' theme. In the case of Lokhandwala, the theme will be 'Bollywood' considering many from the industry reside there. In the case of the Metro station close to the airport, the theme will be related to the airport.

Pravin Darade, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, "We are planning theme-based Metro stations wherein exteriors and interiors of the Metro station will be given a look or theme considering the factors that give identity to a particular locality."

According to MMRDA officials, they will study the importance of each area between Dahisar and Andheri before deciding on the theme for each of the stations. A MMRDA official said, "There are a few Metro stations wherein we have the theme in mind but for a few we may also have to do research. For example, when it comes to IC Colony Metro station on the Link Road, the theme can be church considering the area has old churches but themes are yet to be finalised." Similar experiments of theme-based stations have earlier been implemented by Kochi Metro and the Indian Railways.

The MMRDA had also sought ideas from the public to submit their architectural designs for the Metro stations however MMRDA did not get a satisfactory response and will now appoint a private agency for the same. The MMRDA also plans to brand individual Metro stations wherein private companies can pay a sum of money annually to have their brand name as a prefix or suffix to the actual name of the Metro station.

AT WORK

  • MMRDA is currently carrying out construction work on two Metro corridors namely the Andheri East-Dahisar East Metro-7 corridor and DN Nagar-Dahisar Metro-2A corridor.

  • The total number of Metro stations on these two corridors is around 20.

  • The theme-based Metro station plan will be implemented on these stations and further for all Metro corridors being constructed by MMRDA.
