After Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) lost a major chunk of its existing grounds to various infrastructure projects, it has zeroed down on another piece of land. The land will have a temporary marquee venue that will enable the authority to hold events throughout the year.

On Sunday, the MMRDA had issued a request for a proposal notice to look for agencies that can set up a temporary marquee venue of international standards and managing, promoting, ticketing and curating events, functions, conferences, in G-Block of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

MMRDA proposes to make available a parcel of land — measuring 26,426.43 sq mts — located in G-Block, close to MCA and NSE. It is looking for agencies that are technically capable to set up, host, manage, curate and showcase entertainment, business and private events of every genre.

Dilip Kawatkar, spokesperson, MMRDA confirmed the details. A senior official from MMRDA's Land Department, said, "Our existing MMRDA exhibition ground located opposite Diamond Borse has been occupied for various infrastructure projects. 70 per cent of the land parcel is now being occupied for these projects leaving a mere 30 per cent portion with MMRDA for lending. We realised that we have various land parcels within BKC that have better connectivity and can be used for the same purpose."

However, even the 30 per cent exhibition ground is available for a mere five to six months as it is out of bounds other times owing to the monsoon, said MMRDA officials. "The new ground will have a world-class tent with a capacity of over 8,000-10,000 people. This will be for a period of three years and wouldn't require dismantling, as we do at the exhibition grounds, leading to wear and tear of the tent clothes. Here conferences, exhibitions, and other events can be organised," said the official.

MMRDA will accept the offer of the vendor who will quote the highest monthly license fee. The bids will be accepted till November 26. Currently, one of the sources of revenue for the MMRDA is the property that it rents out to organisers.
