A huge cut-out of Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah) in a cowboy avatar greeted an audience of mostly students, parents and teachers at Jashoda Rang Mandir hall at Vile Parle on Thursday evening.

The stage complete with coloured pots, cranes, a huge lotus and life-sized drum could easily be mistaken for a film set.
But no, this was the inaugural night of Mithibai College's cultural festival Kshitij 2011.

And gracing the occasion was the cast and crew of The Dirty Picture including Vidya Balan (who emerged out of a 'lotus'), Tusshar Kapoor (danced on the drum), Emraan Hashmi (sang on the crane), music composers Vishal & Shekhar, singer Sunidhi Chauhan and the 'disco king' Bappi Lahiri.

While Balan Ooh la la-ed, the singers earned instant fans.
"Thanks to Ekta Kapoor (producer of The Dirty Picture) being a Mithibai alumna, we were able to organise this grand show. It's because of the popularity of the music among students that we agreed, however, we do not endorse or support the film's content," said Meghana Talpade, cultural chairperson, Kshitij.

"I've been associated with Kshitij for the past three years. Over the years, the festival has created a brand for itself. First, we used to go to sponsors, but now MNCs approach us," said Siddhikesh Ghosalkar, a third year student and vice-chairperson of the organising committee.

Elaborating on this year's theme, Broadway Boulevard, Ghosalkar said it's in keeping with last year's theme 'Carnival', symbolic of a celebratory and joyous mode.

"It stands for a colourful, happy mood that we want to project in line with our previous years' fests. The Dirty Picture stands for everything colourful and fun, and so it fit well for our opening night."
