The Thane Police arrested a conman from Mira Road, who availed of rental cars and sold them off in other states, in the last week. The police also recovered five cars worth over Rs 17 lakhs from him.

In May 2018, Sheshoskar Pushkaran Thangil alias Appu (31), a Mira Road resident, asked Thane resident Dashrath Kachre from Patlipada to buy a Toyota Etios car. "He promised Kachre a monthly amount of Rs 17, 662 for the next 13 months which the latter could pay as bank EMI," says senior police inspector Kishore Khairnar from the Kasarvadavli Police Station.

However, when Appu kept dilly-dallying the payment to Kachre for the next 13 months, the latter lodged a police complaint against him on April 13, 2019. "Appu knew Kachre well and the latter trusted him. But, when Appu did not pay him the money nor returned the car, his doubts soared. Appu went underground when Kachre approached the cops," Khairnar said.

Based on Kachre's complaint, the cops laid a trap and arrested Appu in front of Thane civil hospital on April 14. "During the investigation, he confessed to have cheated four more people in a similar manner," the inspector added.

According to sources in the police, Appu was a professional in duping people he knew. He had worked in a travel and tour company and would boast of his contacts in big companies that rented out cars. "He would ask people to buy a car on loan which he would rent out to these companies and help them earn extra money," says Khairnar. Gullible people trusted him and bought the cars which he would then sell off to others in Hyderabad, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Based on his confession, the cops learned that Appu had four similar cases on him in Mira Road, Mumbra, Ghatkopar, and Naya nagar. The police also recovered five cars worth Rs 17.50 lakhs which he had sold off to people in south India.

Currently, Appu is in custody and other police stations are preparing to take his custody for further investigation. "This is just the tip of the iceberg and similar cases are likely to be unearthed in future," he added.
