"Environment-conscious metro commuters have begun using the bottle crusher machines. As awareness regarding these machines spreads, more commuters will come forward to use them. At present, about 2,000 bottles are crushed by commuters everyday on weekdays in each unit," MMOPL spokesperson said.

MMOPL, in July 2017, had installed plastic bottle crushers at DN Nagar, Andheri, Chakala, Marol Naka, Saki Naka and Ghatkopar Metro stations. The bottles are recycled and used as raw material for clothing, carpet and grocery bags. In exchange, it offers discount coupons to commuters.

In its bid to be environment-conscious, MMOPL ensures that coaches of the Metro-1 corridor are washed with recycled water. The agency also installed rooftop solar panels for generating electricity and switched to LED lighting at its offices and stations.
