Mentally ill woman violated in Nagpada

A 32-year-old mentally unstable woman was raped on Wednesday. The victim’s family alleged that the police delayed in registering their complaint, giving a chance to the accused to flee. The police, however, said that even though the incident occurred in the afternoon, the family approached them only around 11.30pm.

Crime branch arrested accused Sayyedullah Shafi Karanjikar alias Liyakat, 32, a driver, from Dongri on Thursday.

The police said the victim, a Grant Road resident, left her house around 2.30pm to go to her aunt’s place. The victim said she lost her way and asked a man to help her with her aunt’s address. The man, Liyakat, on realising the woman was unstable, allegedly took her to Firdaus guest house in Nagpada and raped her.

After she returned home, seeing her state, her father asked her what was wrong and she told him.

The victim’s family said they approached the DB Marg police and were asked to go to Nagpada police station as the incident had occurred in their jurisdiction.

However, deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Nisar Tamboli said, “The victim’s family has been acting irresponsibly. It appears that the father beat up the victim in order to make her give out the man’s name. There was no delay from our end in registering the complaint. We had also sent the victim for medical examination soon after the case was registered.”

A case under section 376 (rape) has been registered with the DB Marg police.
