Meet the only grief counsellor of Pune, Urmila Prabhune (38), attached with the HV Desai Eye Hospital, carrying out this complex task.

Grief counselling is a programme wherein a social worker works towards motivating the bereaved family for an eye donation of their near and dear ones who have passed away. In the two years that she has been working as grief counselor, Prabhune has been able to convince 250 such families. She has to shuttle between the two hospitals to pursue and convince such families. In case of a death, the counsellor deals with the relatives to educate them, consult and convince them about eye donation. “It’s an arduous and challenging task. Many times distraught family members and relatives have even shooed me away. It really takes a lot of effort to convince them,” she admitted. “When the relatives are convinced, a team from an eye bank is called to collect the corneas.”
