An audience of about 100 people attended the Safai Karamchari Parishad, hosted by Mahatma Gandhi Center for Sanitation, Cleanliness and Community Health in collaboration with Safai Kamgaar Parishad Sang on Tuesday.

The programme was aimed at creating awareness on the plight of safai karmacharis of the city.

Activist Priya Haralkar started the discussion on problems faced by safai karmacharis and how they have been neglected by the higher civic and state authorities over the years. Activist Ramesh Haralkar threw light on their current working conditions.

Bhagwan Jadhav, a safai karmachari who suffered an acid attack while at work, told the audience that the police did not file a report in the case, nor did the hospital admit him on time. "I was also not given any respite from work," he said.

On Monday, the NGO Observer Research Foundation released a study on 'Toilet Torture In Mumbai Slums' authored by ORF member Payal Tiwari.
