After suspending the registrations of five medical practitioners who allegedly conduct illegal sex determination on Monday, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is not just sitting back, patting its back.

It seeks to continue taking stringent action against errant doctors. And, currently on its list are four more doctors.

“We are committed in taking stringent action against those violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) (PCPNDT) Act. The suspensions will be a lesson to the rest,” said Dr Kishore Taori, president of the MMC.

The MMC has also written a letter to the directorate of health services asking it to set up a dedicated cell to catch those who violate the Act.

“Now, action against those found violating the PCPNDT Act will be a continuous process. We have asked the directorate of health services to file charge sheets against doctors whose charges are proven at the earliest. We are expecting to suspend the registrations of at least four more doctors soon.”

The council has also sent a proforma to the directorate of health services to streamline the information of the doctors found guilty, so that it can take quick action against them.

“We are trying to bring clarity in the PCPNDT cases sent to us. Presently, the cases sent to us are very sketchy and months are wasted in communication. We cannot take action unless all cases details are made available,” explained Dr Taori.

“The directorate of health services has sent 30-40 cases of PCPNDT Act violations, where the doctor practises either ayurveda or homeopathy. But, the council is only for MBBS doctors.”

This is the first time since the enactment of the PCPNDT Act in 1994 that such stern action has been taken against five medical practitioners.

“It is a heinous act and stringent action is must. Therefore, we support the MMC’s decision to suspend the doctors’ registration. We have decided to remove these doctors from our association and have asked others to not repeat such actions,” said Dr Milind Naik, president of the Indian Medical Association, Maharashtra.

On Monday, the council had invoked the provisions of the MMC Act and PCPNDT Act to take disciplinary action against Dr Madhav Sanap and Dr Sayyad Tarak Ahmad Sayyad from Beed, Dr Bhausaheb Katkar and Dr Keertikumar Argade from Kolhapur and Dr Mohankumar Nagane from Pune.

But, the MMC has not received any details on the Marol doctor who was caught in July in a sting operation for violating the PCPNDT Act and revealing sex of the foetus.

“The directorate of health services is the nodal officer for MBBS doctors. When it will send us information about the case history and the charges against the Marol doctor, we will take action against him the same day,” promised Dr Taori.
