A day after a senior police officer from the Dindoshi police station was arrested for accepting bribe, the Mumbai Police said it will soon activate a mechanism to monitor and check the activities of police officials, especially those at the senior level.
The move is to ensure that there are fewer such cases in the police force, which is among the most corrupt departments.
"We will be activating a monitoring mechanism to ensure that there are fewer cases of corruption. Serious action will be taken on those found to be involved in cases of corruption. The details of this monitoring mechanism cannot be disclosed now," said Dhananjay Kamlakar, joint CP, Law and Order.
He also added that the police personnel are being trained to do their jobs with honesty and integrity. "We are striving for a clean police force. We have planned audits and other review exercises to ensure that such malpractices do not happen in the force," added Kamlakar.
As per the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) statistics, the police department has consistently been the most corrupt department. As many as 118 corruption cases of corruption have been reported in the force between January and April 2014 where officials were caught after traps were laid by the ACB. Although several other departments such as Revenue, Land Survey, MMRDA and BMC have also cases of corruption, the police department tops the list this year too.
According to ACB officials, the police department is vulnerable to corruption as it is a visible department with a lot of public interaction. As Vishwas Nangre Patil, Additional CP of ACB puts it, "Police are visible administrators whose action lead to negative results such as arrests, detention, etc. Therefore, they are more influenced to seek bribes and other favours. We have enhanced our traps in the department and are seeing good results." According to the police, corruption in the force, at any level, can end once every citizen is aware of their rights. "People should realise they cannot be exploited by anybody. Once the police is also monitored efficiently, the cases will decrease," said a senior officer.
