Measles, rubella vaccine drive in Mumbai on November 27

After successfully conducting the polio campaign for over the years, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now gearing up to start another big campaign in the city against measles.

The campaign against measles and rubella will be launched on November 27 across Maharashtra. During this campaign, 30 lakh children will be vaccinated in Mumbai. The BMC will start the campaign with the help of health and education department as well as NGOs.

Government of India has set a goal to eliminate measles and control rubella and congenital rubella syndrome by the year 2020. The campaign of vaccination already completed in 28 states and more than 13 crore children between 9 months and 15 years of age.

The campaign, targeted at 41 crore children, will now start in Maharashtra. Under this campaign, all children will be given a single shot of measles-rubella (MR) vaccination, irrespective of their previous MR vaccination, said Dr Santosh Revankar, Joint Executive Health Officer of the BMC health department. Out of the 30 lakhs children around 18 lakh, children are school going. This campaign will be conducted for the period of 4 to 5 weeks in which first 2 to 3 weeks vaccination sessions will be held at all schools across the state.

Measles is a highly infectious viral disease causing illness and death due to complication in the form of diarrhoea, pneumonia or brain infection mostly among children less than 5 years of age. Rubella is a mild yet highly contagious viral disease that can cause crippling birth defects or death of the unborn child of an infected pregnant woman.

Congenital rubella syndrome is a set of serious congenital defects a child may be born with when a pregnant woman gets rubella infection in her early pregnancy. It causes blindness, deafness, heart defects, mental retardation, liver disorders and other haematological disorders.
