The theme this year for the Navy Day celebration today is Mission Deployed and Combat Ready. Navy Day is an annual event organised to commemorate the attack by the Indian naval vessels during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The naval officers, while briefing the media on Monday at the Indian Navy Ship (INS) Kochi in the city, said that amid the ongoing conflicts between the two countries to establish their dominance over the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Indian Navy has played a crucial role in promoting the security and national interest in the maritime domain of the country.

The officers said that the economic highways that pass through the IOR are constantly under the Navy's surveillance and it has focused on technical upgrades over the past years. "Patrolling ships to curb piracy and smuggling has also been doubled; the aim is to bring down the numbers. The Western Naval Command also undertook a variety of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. All warships are deployed with relief stores and always ready to render assistance," said Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.

He said, "Several initiatives to harness technology to improve our coastal security network are in progress and this will be fully implemented in near future through collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. This includes the fully functional National Command Control, Communication, and Intelligence (NC3I), Common Operational Picture (COP) in the maritime domain."

"As part of modern warfare, bilateral and trilateral maritime exercises have turned out to be an important element and crucial for building diplomatic relations. Some of them like Paschim Lehar, Parikshan, Madad, and Zayed Talwar have proved to be efficient steps to bring India closer with not only her neighbours but also with western powers," Luthra said.

"The Western Naval Command is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year and it had contributed a lot to the development and prosperity of the Indian Navy. Maritime security and stability in the IOR is the prime focus of the navy. The theme this year suggests discharging of our responsibility while simultaneously keeping ourselves battle ready all times," he said.
