"The garbage is been burnt here regularly. What they are doing is illegal," said Nikhil Banker, a Marine Drive resident and joint secretary of Marine Drive Residents Action Group (MDRAG). The residents complained of garbage being burnt at the Shree Niketan Garden, which is on the same road.

Residents have been raising issues of restricted access to the open space since some time and had also taken the matter to the city collector office. They have also alleged that school children and residents living in the vicinity are not allowed because the trust uses the space for the school it runs.

It must be noted that burning waste is not allowed under municipal laws. Recently, the authorities have asked residents generating bulk beyond a certain limit to compost it. "My building faces the garden. They have been burning it at least once a week. It creates smoke and pollution and makes me really uncomfortable. I think they have been burning dry leaves also," said Manisha Haji, resident of Western Court a building that faces the open space. When DNA tried contacting the office of Shreeprakash Somani, one of the trustees looking after the open space, there was no response.ked in a mishap on Tuesday.
