The Maharashtra Medical Council has found that several doctors attached with public hospitals are continuing their practice without renewing their registration. The body has written to the Directorate of Health Services and Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) about this.Dr Kishor Taori, president of MMC said, “To practice in Maharashtra, it is a must to be registered with the MMC. It was seen that many doctors working in the public sector hadn’t renewed their registrations. We have written to the DMER and DHS to ensure that doctors working with them do so.”Doctors are required to renew their MMC registration every five years. “Once doctors get an administrative post in the public sector, they don’t feel the need to renew their registration,” said Taori.Observing that a large number of doctors failed to renew their registration even after 20 years, the MMC has now started a scheme for these doctors. “They need to pay a certain amount of money and submit an affidavit saying that there is no medico-legal case registered under their name. We had at least 150 to 200 doctors across the state who didn’t renew their registration for 20 to 25 years,” said Dr Shiv Kumar Utture, MMC executive member.According to MMC’s rules, doctors who have failed to get their registration renewed are given a warning, followed by the cancellation of their registration number. “Once the registration number is cancelled, the doctor needs to apply for a new number. However, as the number of doctors who have failed to renew their registration is so high, we started this new scheme,” said Utture. To renew registration, a doctor needs to complete 30 credit hours of Continuing Medical Education. “The doctors have to attend conferences and workshops at recognised institutions or publication of medical books or chapters and articles in medical journals. This ensures that the doctor updated with developments in their field,” said Taori.
